The Step Afrika! International Youth Exchange Program is an innovative project designed to facilitate unique and meaningful experiences for international communities. Step Afrika! and DCPS selected ten students from six DCPS high schools to serve as the first US student cultural ambassadors to participate in the program in Zagreb, Croatia. This was part of DCPS’ Empowering Males of Color Initiative announced earlier in 2015.
Beginning in 2012, Step Afrika partnered with the US Embassy/Croatia to host a week-long Step Camp for young people from across Europe. In addition to the art form of stepping, students developed self-confidence, cultural pride, and a stronger understanding of the world around them:
The students spoke about the program during Step Afrika!’s 20th Anniversary Home Performance Series (June 4-7, 2015).
