Step Afrika! performs at the first-ever Juneteenth Celebration at the White House

On June 14, 2023, Step Afrika! joined The President and First Lady for the first-ever Juneteenth Celebration on the South Lawn of The White House.

 

This celebration of community, culture, and music opened with remarks from Vice President Kamala Harris and renowned activist Opal Lee, setting the tone for the performances that followed. The program featured Audra McDonald, the Broadway Inspirational Voices, Cliff “Method Man” Smith, Colman Domingo, the Fisk Jubilee Singers, the Hampton University Concert Choir, Jennifer Hudson, Ledisi, Maverick City Music, the Morgan State University Marching Band – The Magnificent Marching Machine, Nicco Annan, Patina Miller, Step Afrika!, the Tennessee State University Marching Band – Aristocrat of Bands, and “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band.

 

 

The President concluded the program with a reflection on the bipartisan legislation that established Juneteenth as the nation’s newest Federal holiday, and his work to advance racial equity and ensure the promise of America for Black Americans. Step Afrika! is privileged to have been a part of this historic celebration, centered in our home here in the DMV.
